Navigating Loss: When Death Occurs At Home

If your loved one passes away at home, it’s a deeply emotional and challenging time. We will gently guide you on the next steps from your first contact with us. The attending doctor will issue a death certificate, or, if out of hours, a locum doctor or nurse will provide a letter attesting to the death. This will allow our first response care team to transfer your loved one into our care. The death certificate can be collected from the surgery during regular hours.

Handling Loss: Death In Hospital Or Hospice Care

When a loved one passes in a hospital, hospice, or professional care facility, the duty doctor will complete the death certificate, and your loved one will usually be transferred to the mortuary. If the care facility does not have these facilities, rest assured that we have our state-of-the-art private chapel of rest, where your loved one will be cared for until the funeral.

Supporting Families Through Sudden Loss

In cases of sudden or unexpected death, such as accidents or when the deceased’s GP cannot issue a death certificate, the matter may be referred to the Procurator Fiscal. The Fiscal will engage a contracted undertaker to transport the deceased to the mortuary, and a post-mortem may be required.

A death certificate will be issued once the Procurator Fiscal has completed its investigation. If cremation is intended, it’s essential to notify the Procurator Fiscal. Even in Fiscal cases, early contact with us is recommended so we can guide and assist you through the necessary procedures.
